Older Nokomis houses need careful prep

Much of the housing in Nokomis is older, set on a grid of streets around the downtown. Many of these homes carry layer after layer of paint from past owners. Each coat is only as good as the one under it. When an old layer lets go, everything on top peels with it. So before we quote an exterior, we check how well the existing paint is holding on.

Farm fields come right up to the edge of town, and dust from planting and harvest settles on the walls. Humid summers add mildew on the shady sides of a house. Paint put over dust or mildew sticks to that layer instead of the siding, and it flakes within a season or two. We power wash first and let the walls dry before any primer goes on.

Inside a house, water is what ruins a paint job. A frozen pipe or a leak around the roof leaves a stain that bleeds straight through fresh paint if nobody deals with it. We handle the water damage repair first, then paint the walls and ceilings. We also paint kitchen cabinets, and we coat garage floors so road salt tracked in on tires does not eat into the concrete.

What Nokomis winters do to steel

Most of the steel around Nokomis sits outside all year. Trucks and trailers pick up road salt all winter, and it packs into frames and under fenders. Freeze and thaw open every small chip a little wider. Once water and salt get under the edge of a coating, rust spreads underneath where you cannot see it. By the time the paint bubbles, the metal below has been rusting for a while.

Painting over that rust does not stop it. The new coat covers the rust, and it keeps spreading under the paint until the paint lifts off in flakes. So we sandblast first. The blast strips old paint and rust down to clean, bare steel and leaves the surface slightly rough. Primer grips that rough steel far better than smooth or rusty metal, and the coating holds on much longer.

Cold causes its own trouble. Most coatings need warmth to cure hard, and paint sprayed on a freezing day can stay soft or fail to bond at all. Our Fillmore shop is temperature controlled, so equipment from Nokomis can come inside and cure properly in the middle of winter. Field work has to wait for weather that allows it. When a piece can be hauled, a cold month is a good reason to bring it in.

Where your Nokomis job gets painted

Some work cannot come to us. A storage tank or the structural steel inside a building has to be done where it stands. We bring the crew and equipment to your site in or around Nokomis. A tank may get cleaned with high pressure water jetting before it is coated. Some tank linings are two-part coatings, sprayed through a machine that mixes the two parts at the gun.

Anything that can be hauled is usually better off in our Fillmore shop. Trucks and heavy equipment come inside, where we blast and paint out of the wind and the field dust. Storage containers come in the same way. Indoors, the spray lands on the steel instead of drifting across a field, and nothing blows onto a wet coat while it cures.

Some jobs need more than a finished coat. The buyer wants each step of the coating done in order and written down. Robb Spear hired us for a large equipment painting job with "a complex paint and documentation process" to follow.
